The Spirit of Coolpets.com
Coolpets.com is a place for people who love pets. It’s a place to swap stories, advice, tips, meet new people, and just plain have fun. We want to be a community where the claws remain retracted at all times. Coolpets.com is a retreat from the snarling and scratching that takes place every where else on the web. No snapping—only sharing! If there’s one thing we learn from our four-legged (or finned) friends, it’s unconditional and unwavering love and loyalty.  Let’s follow their lead and spread the love!
  Keep it family-friendly
Folks of every age love animals, from one to one hundred. Coolpets.com is meant to be a place even pint-sized pet lovers can enjoy. What does this mean? It means that any language and images that are inappropriate for children aren’t welcome. In fact, they’re forbidden. Community members who break this rule will be banned. And that’s a bummer for your furry (or scaly) friend who’s not the one with a potty mouth. If nothing else, keep it clean for your animal companion. Don’t post comments and pictures that need to be picked up with a pooper scooper! Coolpets absolutely forbids any content that is hateful, threatening, violent, sexually explicit, regarding guns or firearms, tobacco or alcohol. We reserve the right to determine what is acceptable and remove any content that we feel is inappropriate. If you are unsure whether your content is appropriate, please ask before posting or uploading.
  Keep it kind

Can you feel the love? We hope so! Coolpets.com is a community of sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows. Far too many online communities are full of meanies. So keep it kind, which means no flaming, no name calling, and no personal attacks. No cyber-bullies allowed.

  No one likes a spammer

Spammers are the bane of society. Someday, we’ll ship them all off to a deserted island, one with no coconut trees or deodorant. Until then, the least we can do is keep them out of the Coolpets Community. Unsolicited advertisements or repeat bulk-style communications make us flare up like a beta fish. They’re flat-out forbidden.

  No “for sale” ads allowed

Rarely does a pet just show up on our doorstep and ask to be adopted—it’s especially hard for a fish to do so. Instead, we’ve got to seek out our animal companions. However, Coolpets.com is not the place for advertising pet sales and/or breeding services. We will be added a section for pet sales in the future. We will provide links to animal adoption sites as well.

  No solicitations

We love pets, and we wish we could help each and every animal on the planet. Unfortunately, a few bad apples make us leery of the whole orchard. For the safety of our members, Coolpets doesn’t allow public solicitations of charity or donations unless previously approved by Coolpets.com

  Play well with others
As the human representative of your sweet, beloved pet, you are responsible for your interactions with members of the Coolpets Community. Do your pet proud, and always behave with maturity and kindness. If you come across members who aren’t playing well with others, please bring it to our attention.

Generally speaking, pet owners are the warmest, friendliest folks around. Unfortunately, a meanie will occasionally sneak in. In the world of online communities, they’re called “trolls.” We must protect our pets from trolls, especially if your pet is one of the three billy goats gruff! If you encounter a troll lurking under a bridge, don’t sink to their level. They’re just trying to get your goat! (Nice pun, huh?) Instead, let us know and we’ll take appropriate action. Retaliation might be tempting, but it’s never okay to break the community rules. Just tell us. Together, we can rid the Coolpets Community of trolls
  Pet Pages
Every pet is special and unique. Thus, we believe every pet should have their own page, including rescue organizations using the site.

Coolpets.com is a place for your pet to shine, so don’t hog the spotlight. The primary photo on your pet page must be of your pet.

All photos and videos that you upload through Coolpets must be of your pets, family, etc. Coolpets.com isn’t the place to declare your undying love for George Clooney with the  exception of the pet owner photo(s). We ask that all content on your pet’s page be relevant to your pet and his/her human family.

Again, Coolpets.com is a family-friendly site. No profane or obscene names or nicknames can be used on your page—whether for you or your pet.

Since we want to do our part to help pets find their forever homes, adoptable pet pages can be posted through viable rescue or foster operations. Just make sure to keep the page current, and update it whenever a lucky pet has found a loving home.

Our family-friendly policy extends to links to music, videos, and any other media content which are located on websites other than Coolpets.com. Music or any other content containing profanity, overt sexuality, or other non-family friendly content is forbidden, and we’ll remove it without notice.
  Forums and Comments

Our public forums and comment areas are very open places meant for meeting and greeting. Remember that trolls and cyber-bullies aren’t welcome in our forums. Keep the discussions fun, friendly and informative at all times. Arguments aren’t the same thing as discussions. Folks looking to snarl, snap, and bite can find plenty of places to do so on the web. But we don’t cotton to that type of behavior here.

Entries that are not considered friendly, civil and open to all members are forbidden, and we’ll remove them as soon as they’re brought to our attention. Don’t forget that hamsters are notorious snitches. It’s a little known fact that 75% of them are former hall monitors.

We all love the First Amendment. We’re lucky to have free speech, but here’s a morsel of constitutional law that will make you sound super intellectual at cocktail parties: your free speech rights are against the government—not private citizens! That means Coolpets.com has the right to make sure that forum discussions remain friendly and relevant to the Coolpets Community. It also means we can delete any post that violates these guidelines or is otherwise not in keeping with the spirit of Coolpets.

Kindly refrain from posting political and religious statements in the forums. Let’s keep Coolpets a place where we can share in the joys of pets and pet parenthood and take a breather from the intensity of the non-pet world. We all know that turtles are skilled debaters, but let’s give them a chance to relax and rest their brains.

Plus, anyone who’s ever visited a public forum knows that attempts to debate emotional issues on a message board virtually always end in flaming and name calling. Those are two things that Coolpets.com never wants and won’t tolerate.

Ending a rant or other mean-spirited post with a smiley face does not magically transform it into joke. And a sentence that starts with the disclaimer "I don't mean to be rude, but ..." is almost surely going to be rude. In public forums, the best and easiest way to deal with a person that is behaving badly is to simply ignore them. Trolls perish when ignored.

To drive home the point again: never use language in your forum posts that is unfit for a kindergartner’s eyes. Your pet will be so disappointed if they have to wash your mouth out with soap.

One last thing: remember that Coolpets.com doesn’t allow postings offering or alluding to the sale of any animals or breeding services. Also, Coolpets.com does not allow for the solicitation of charity or donations unless previously approved by Coolpets.

Last, no offerings of the sale of any other goods and services can be posted here. If your pet is an Avon sales lady, she’ll have to find another place to ply her wares.
We can’t keep you in a protective bubble—we’d like to, but we can’t

We work hard to keep Coolpets.com a safe place, but this is still the Internet! You have to be proactive in protecting yourself from the phishers and other would-be identity thefts that are itching to get a hold of your personal information. With this in mind, limit the amount of personal information you post publicly on Coolpets and encourage others to do so as well. This includes e-mail addresses, instant messenger IDs, addresses, phone numbers, or bank account information.

Every member’s responsibility to keep Coolpets safe and friendly
If you feel that a member is violating any one of these guidelines, please notify us with the member’s name and the location/nature of the content in question. We’ll review the content as fast as we can.

If you feel that a forum or comment post is against our guidelines, please use the "report" link at the bottom of the message. When notifying on a post, you should always give an explanation so our moderators can clearly understand your reasoning.

Please note that misusing the notification link is a very serious offense. If you purposefully pull a forum entry because of any reason other than inappropriate content in that post you risk losing your rights to participate in the forums. Reporting a member’s post without a valid reason makes you a troll. And we know you don’t want to be a troll.
If you should happen to disagree with a moderator action…
Members should always respect the statements of forum moderators and other Coolpets.com employees. We understand that you may disagree with an employee or moderator action. The correct way to address your grievance is to directly contact Coolpets.com. The wrong way is to challenge, defy, debate, or ignore the moderator or employee in any of the public forums.

We here at Coolpets are cool cats; we are understanding and carefully consider all grievances. We will respond to your concerns as quickly as we can. However, just because we don’t respond as fast as you would like us to doesn’t mean you can violate Community Guidelines in the mean time.
  Tribes
Tribes are like a virtual clubhouse. They’re a place where you can privately hang out with like-minded community members. With any Coolpets.com tribe, membership is voluntary and at your discretion. And you can leave a tribe at any time for any reason. Since tribes are user-maintained, please contact the tribe administrator if you have concerns about your tribe.

Because tribes are private, we allow them leeway with regard to some of the Community Guidelines explained above. But, if a tribe chooses not to adhere to our overall Community Guidelines, their rebel behavior should never spill out onto other parts of the site.

Or….the client can go with this statement: Remember, all of the Community Guidelines explained above also apply to tribes.
Certain rules all tribes must follow
Tribe home pages, however, are publicly viewable. Tribe moderators and members must always comply with the Community Guidelines when constructing, posting, or uploading to tribe home pages.

There should never be activity in tribes related to studding, breeding, or sales of animals.

Racism and hate language are never acceptable, ever.

Unwanted spamming via messaging or any tribe features is not allowed. If you're in doubt about what defines unwanted or unacceptable messaging, please contact your tribe administrator for their advice.
  Responses to Violations
Alas, some rules are not meant to be broken, and that includes our Community Guidelines. We hope it never comes to this, but remember that Coolpets.com has the right to take action if you disregard or violate the Community Guidelines. Actions we can take include, but are not limited to, editing inappropriate language, temporarily denying access to certain features, temporarily denying access to all features, or deleting your account and permanently denying your right to participate in the Coolpets Community.

At times, Coolpets might place an account under temporary review. If your account is under review by Coolpets, under no circumstances should you create a new account, log in using another person's account, or try to circumvent the review process in any way. You simply have to wait it out. If you do try to circumvent a temporary review, it could result in your losing permanent rights of membership. We would really hate to see that happen.

A Coolpets.com employee will contact you about the status of your account. Please be patient. We don’t want to mistakenly take action against someone who doesn’t deserve it—what a bummer that would be for your pet! The review process can take a while, but it’s only because we care.

If you have done anything so absolutely rotten as to permanently lose your membership rights, you will never again be allowed create an account, pet page, or in anyway participate in the Coolpets Community. Just follow the rules. We don’t want to have to turn anyone away for bad behavior.
  Questions or concerns
If you have any questions or concerns about these guidelines or their meaning, you can contact us at any time. It’s always best to err on the side of caution if you’re unsure.
  Your privacy

We respect your privacy, and Coolpets is not the business of acting as Big Brother. That being said, please remember that if we need to research any abuse of our Community Guidelines, we retain the right to review all private messaging, forum posts, group messaging, or any other communication done through Coolpets.com. However, we’re not a bunch of gossiping old hens, and such information will never be shared beyond our immediate team.

  Help us improve

If you have suggestions regarding the Community Guidelines, please share them with us. We’re a dynamic, ever-changing community. As such, these guidelines may, from time to time, need updating or modification.  We’re always interested in your feedback.

Legal notice: Although, we may have our favorites, Coolpets.com does not discriminate against any cool pet. We allow dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles, and even lobsters
(yes, we have a member with a lobster family pet) to be a part of the coolpets.com family. Our legal team has strongly suggested that we advise you, that even though all your pets may get along perfectly and even be in each other's friend's or family lists on coolpets.com, that in a live situation, there may be some minor or major tussles.
